NIOSH Releases Draft Guidance on Beryllium
Comments accepted through May 12

NIOSH is accepting public comments through May 12 on its new guidance document NIOSH Alert: Preventing Chronic Beryllium Disease and Beryllium Sensitization. The guidance document, which "does not have the force and effect of law," includes recommendations for both workers and employers and highlights the differences between the current exposure limits recommended by NIOSH, OSHA, and the U.S. Department of Energy. NIOSH's scientific studies indicate exposure to the metal combined with certain genetic factors can lead to an allergic response and a chronic respiratory disorder.
